I’m sorry if I left anyone hanging this week, wondering what in the world I was doing to not have posted a blog on Monday, but… I got to cross over! Being on the other side was great- who would have guessed Brownsville, TX could be so exciting- we ate ChikfilA and went to Target! It was kind of crazy coming from our little colonia in the middle of nowhere, Mexico to- in a matter of hours- being in Target, which is basically a consumer’s paradaise (as we all know). Even more exciting was the Starbucks inside the Target… the coffee here is a little bit of a letdown.
I had really wanted to update everyone though, because the past few times at the prison have been incredible. I was talking to one of the women there- Gabriella- about the English classes, and found out that the girl teaching them was actually one of the prisoners. Naturally, I was excited about the fact that someone there spoke English, so I asked to meet here, and the next thing I know Alejandra is sitting me down and telling me her life story! She became a Christian when she first got to the jail in July, and talking to her the past 3 visits have been such a testament to the Holy Spirit’s power. Her first bible was the one we gave her this week, and yet this woman so clearly a new creation in Christ- her words are Spirit- filled despite lacking all of the “Christianese” terminology we’re all so used to, and her attitude and actions within her situation are quite simply God-glorifying. I cannot help but be amazed at God’s work in allowing me to build a relationship with Alejandra; I had originally been so sure that the women’s shelter would be the place where I would have an opportunity to disciple women, and so I was somewhat confused when I felt such a clear call to do my internship at the prison. Clearly God is one step ahead of me! I would be so honored to have you pray for my times with Alejandra- I’ve never discipled anyone before, and its easy for my pride to get built up over this. Please pray for my time with her (I go Wednesdays and Fridays, from 2-4)- that it would be fully about Christ and that I would be a humble vessel for His words to her!
